What is Omnilux light therapy?

In the 1970’S NASA discovered that Light Emitting Diodes not only stimulated plants to grow,(they were researching growing vegetables in space), but it also helped skin to grow. It stimulated the cells and boosted collagen production. Since then LED therapy has been used to heal, stimulate and improve skin.

You may have read about light therapy in magazines and heard of ‘light bars’. It’s a great treatment for busy city dwellers as you can have a quick 30 minute lunchtime break facial, and then go about your day. No downtime, just quick easy and effective. We have Omnilux light therapy machines here at Remedies, a red light for rejuvenation and a blue light for acne. We offer it as an add on to all our treatments, so you too can have a quick 30 minute session and leave feeling even better. I wanted to learn more about how this LED light therapy really works so get ready for the science bit coming up.

How does it work?

BLUE LIGHT treats acne, targeting the acne-causing bacteria.

RED LIGHT is best for anti-ageing, targeting lines and wrinkles

As we grow older, the cells that manufacture the skin’s supportive structures begin to slow down. Environmental damage from the sun’s rays speed up this process and produce free radicals that damage the skin and the cells that produce collagen and elastin. Omnilux combination light therapy targets specific cells which are responsible for the synthesis and repair of the skin’s supportive structures, leading to a softening of fine lines and improved skin tone.

The initial effects you will see are a clearer, brighter and smoother complexion. After the course of treatments you will begin to notice an improvement in tone, clarity and texture. Studies have shown over 80% of subjects reported a softening of fine lines, and 75% reported improvement in skin softness and smoothness* (data from the Omnilux website).

Unlike other treatments, where the effects are short lived, OMNILUX Combination Light Therapy stimulates natural cellular processes that rejuvenate and repair the skin. Thus, the results you see with OMNILUX continue to improve for up to 4 to 6 months after the light treatment.

Skin Rejuvenation

The different lights target specific cells which are responsible for the synthesis and repair of the skin’s supportive structures. The composite effect leaves the skin fuller and tighter in appearance. It stimulates the deeper skin tissue, leading to a softening of fine lines, improved skin  tone & super smooth skin.

Acne

Acne is one for the world’s most common skin conditions and results from obstruction, bacterial colonisation and inflammation of the sebaceous follicles.

One of the key bacteria responsible for the inflammation, produces natural chemicals called porphyrins, which are sensitive to light at different wavelengths. When stimulated these chemicals will neutralise the bacteria.

With no bacteria present the inflammation will subside. Furthermore, the action of light on the sebaceous glands produces an environment that is inhibitory to the growth of the bacteria. Omnilux blue light only treatment (for mild to moderate Acne vulgaris) demonstrated an 89%* reduction in inflamed acne.

When added to other skin treatments e.g. Peels, Microdermabrasion, Micro-needling, Omnilux further increases the end results. Used alternatively with Intense Pulse Light (IPL) and Laser, this light source helps further to maintain the skin’s optimum functions, and all these treatments we offer here at Remedies.

What is the treatment like?

This is a relaxing treatment, you lie back on the treatment couch with the light emitting Omnilux head being placed close to the face. You wear goggles, but you can still see a bright light through your eyelids when the machine is turned on.

Also as an added benefit if you suffer from SAD disorder ‘in the last few years LED light boxes for the treatment of Seasonal Affective Disorder have been proven to be just as effective as traditional tube bulb SAD Light devices. SAD.org.uk recommends the use of LED Lightboxes as well as traditional tube bulb light therapy devices.’ (Information from SAD.org website)

How many treatments will I need? This depends upon your individual treatment régime, but 9 OMNILUX sessions closely together (weekly or bi-weekly) show excellent results both immediately and longer term.
